these first images show the illusion of motion. The image of the kitten is an example of anticipated motion. The kitten is in mid run or bound and your mind tells you that gravity will be taking over any second now. The kitten will hit the ground and presumably continue to run, this is the essence of anticipated motion. The Picture of the martial artists (In the upper right) shows motion with blurred outlines. Notice that the teacher is vary crisp looking (with clean edges) and the students are barely recognizable from the blur of sudden motion. The contrast between teacher and student clearly shows the illusion of motion through blurred outlines. The last picture of motion is the orbs in the checkered hallway (bottom right of this paragraph). this image shows motion through figure cropping. The orbs are off the page on the outside edges giving the feeling of motion. However I am not sure if the orbs are traveling towards or away from the viewer because there is no line or texture to show direction.

These Images show the illusion of space. The pic with the subject on the stairs shows space from an aerial perspective. You are looking down on the subject and the vanishing point is in or near the center of the image. There is also a bit of an overlapping sense of space. The spiral stairs overlap the ground and base stairs and the pole overlaps the spiral stairs. The pole and "cage" surrounding the stairs also creates something of a linear perspective. they all point to the vanishing point. The image below (smurfesque.com) shows space with overlapping elements. The drop shadows and layering make each piece seem like it is floating above the last. The image in the upper right (checkered hall again) shows space through size variation and linear perspective. The checkered walls and floor create lines that all travel to a vanishing point in the center of the page. The orbs in this "checkered hall" grow smaller as they get closer to the vanishing point furthering the illusion of space.

Head shot

Sorry this one is late everyone.
This is the best "head-shot" that I could find of myself. It is not centered or balanced, as you can see I'm leaning to the right. I'm not sure if I'm leaning away from the support beam or if I'm leaning into the sun. I do like how the sun works in this picture though, with my right side more illuminated that the left. Even looking at the eyes one is "lit up" while the other is darker, almost dull. the horizon in the background is a small mountaintop that is miles and niles away. This is a good representation of myself because I see everything as a journey, the farther away the better and the best journeys never end. The horizon also softens the contrast between my shirt and the white sky, adding a little more depth to the picture. The right shoulder is up a little higher than the other so you can tell that I am leaning on something (its the railing). This leaning of my head and shoulder dost a few things; It changes the way the sun plays off the picture, it keeps everything out of balance and centricity, it emphisizes my tilted face and proped shoulder (warmer colors "poping" more than the cooler ones), and lastly it leaves me with a sense of readyness, even restlessness, dorment energy waiting to be set into motion.
all in all I think this picture suits me well, mostly because Im not the type of person who just waita fore anything.

Balance

This assignment was particularly difficult, mostly the second part. Rearranging negative space into a dynamic image with balance is a vary time consuming process. I would have liked to use some more interesting kitchen tools like a colander or something like that but that would have turned the completion time from hours into days.

The results from part 2 are my favorite. I'm not sure if I'm looking at a puppet master or an evil Pillsbury Dough Boy.
I tried to upload these images in the requested 18"x24" format but the blog would not allow it so if you would like the larger version please let me know where and how you would like it sent.

focal points and emphesis

I was luckty enough to find this pick at,

http://www.rsiphotos.com/gallery_detail.php?PhotoID=133

they say its a "rare optical phenomenon" .
First find the triangle: sun = top, horizon = base.
Then notice the dark portion of the triangle in the center of the base.
Now cover the bright reflective part of the water with something (the better you cover this area the better the phenomenon will work).
Then poof! The dark part of the triangle disappears.

The focal point in this picture is the sun. The sun is isolated, and in extreme contrast with everything except the reflection. The sun is also the focal point because of placement although it could be argued that the horizon is the focal point from placement. There is also a psychilogical emphasis for me i the sun picture but i think that comes from the horizon too.

The picture of the room has no focal point at all. it was difficult to find an image with no focal point and I'm not sure what i think of it. I guess i just feel lost, I have vary empty feelings about the room

looking at unity....(week 2)

this is an image that i happened upon by chance, I'll tell you how on Saturday evening.

I see repetition in this image covering similarity and variety. If you follow the shapes and colors you can almost make out a pattern but the farther you follow it the more it fades away.

The continuation also shows here except at the top where you can almost see a skyline or something.
This image uses a grid as an organizing factor and is chaotic and unreadable. I never thought something organized on a grid could be so chaotic!! If you focus on one area of the picture at a time you will see vary similar line/shape patterns. It appears as if these areas are grouped according to these patterns. Showing the less similar patterns further from the more similar in an expression of unity through proximity.

Lastly, This picture of space is my choice for a figurative expression of unity. When i look at the night sky I think, we look just like one of those dots out there to somebody on a different planet, I think how we are all a part of this same universe and therefore united.

Scale Assignment

I had a case of confusion for a while but I'm better now. Here is my scale assignment and I look forward to posting the rest of my work soon.
